Configuring DNS for a Name.com Domain

If the domain added to BL.INK is managed through Name.com, follow the steps below to configure the DNS to use BL.INK.

In order to use BL.INK, DNS must be configured to point the domain to BL.INK so that we are able to route the traffic to the links to the correct destination. There are two options for configuring DNS depending on the type of domain being used for short links.

CAUTION:

If the domain is currently used for a website, please consider adding a subdomain and using Option 2 so that the DNS changes do not bring down the wbesite when connecting the domain with BL.INK.

Many users opt to set up a different domain for use with BL.INK and then point it back to the existing website with our Home page setting.

NOTE:

If the BL.INK account was added through a Name.com account, the below settings will not be applicable. DNS will be automatically configured through Name.com. Please contact [email protected] for DNS inquiries.

Option 1: For use with a primary or root domain

If the domain added to BL.INK is the root of the domain (ex. yourdomain.com), the A record must be pointed to BL.INK. This essentially tells the domain where to point.

To update the A Record for the domain, start by logging in to the Name.com account. Then click My Domains in the upper right corner.

Select the domain, and then click Manage DNS Records. Set the Type to A, leave the Host field blank, and then set the Answer field to 18.208.85.101. Then click Add Record.

NOTE:

Please allow 24-48 hours for DNS to propagate.

Option 2: For use with a subdomain

If the domain added to BL.INK is a subdomain of the primary domain (ex. links.yourdomain.com), a new CNAME Record needs to be added to the DNS configuration. This is another type of DNS entry that routes the traffic to the specific subdomain.

The benefit of setting up a CNAME is that users will not have to worry about future DNS changes in the event we have to migrate the domain.

To add a CNAME Record for the domain, start by logging into the Name.com account. Click My Domains in the upper right corner. Select the domain, and then click Manage DNS Records.

Under Type, select CNAME. Under Host, type in the keyword that precedes the domain (ex. For the domain links.yourdomain.com, the Host would be link). Under Answer, type in bl2.blink.domains. Then click Add Record

NOTE:

Please allow 24-48 hours for DNS to propagate.

Adding and removing domains in Name.com account

If BL.INK was purchased through Name.com and the primary domain was provisioned to use with BL.INK in error instead of a subdomain, users can add and delete domains in the Name.com account by clicking here and following the instructions from Name.com.
