Configuring a Domain Name in BL.INK

Adding a custom domain allows you to create branded links through BL.INK. Branded links are a great way to promote specific content that’s anchored to your brand.

BL.INK offers a few different options for setting up a custom domain name to shorten your links. You’re able to set up a domain name you already own or purchase a new domain with your BL.INK account. BL.INK offers many different domains at a discounted price for the first year of registration.

Continue reading to learn about the different options for setting up a custom domain to use with BL.INK.

Using a Domain you own with BL.INK

Before you get started in setting up a domain you own through another registrar, it’s important to note that in order to use BL.INK to shorten your links, you will need to update the DNS for your domain name. If you’re planning to use the domain’s root (ex. yourdomain.com), you will need to point the A record to BL.INK so that we’re able to route the traffic to the correct destination.

If your website lives on the root of your domain, you may want to consider setting up a subdomain for use with BL.INK (ex. links.yourdomain.com). You will still need to configure the DNS for your subdomain, but this will prevent your website from being impacted.

To set up a domain you own through another registrar, start by logging into your BL.INK account.

From the drop-down in the upper left, (where it reads "Smart Links") select Add New Domains

Then click 'Add an existing domain' in the top right, then follow the steps to configure your domain name to be used on BL.INK.

Note: You will need to log in to your domain name host account (where your domain was purchased or is currently hosted) to configure the domain’s DNS to use with BL.INK. Check out this article for more information on DNS configuration.

Once the domain has been added, you can then navigate back to the BL.INK homepage and click on the dropdown in the upper left, (where it reads "Smart Links"). You will see your newly added domain displayed.

Setting your Default Domain

BL.INK allows you to set your default domain from your account settings to ensure that your domain shows automatically instead of having to select it each time you create a link.

To set the domain as your default, click your name in the upper right, and then click My Account.

From here, you’ll see Default Domain on the right. Click here and select your domain from the list. Then click Save.
